Mbawula was established in 1998 by saxophonist/arranger Paul Bartholomew and South African pianist Adam Glasser to combine the vibrancy of South African Township Music and the power of Big Band Jazz.
Mbawula’s debut was at the Oris London Jazz Festival in 1998, featuring South African vocalists Pinese Saul, Julia Mathunjwa, Nomvula Nzladiwane and veteran vocalist Joe Mogotsi of the Manhattan Brothers.
They appeared at South Africa Freedom Day at Trafalgar Square in the presence of Nelson Mandela.
Recorded a session for Andy Keshaw’s BBC Radio 3 show and 'The World at your Street’ website.
They have appeared in many festivals and venues up and down the country, often joined in the finale by the Mbawula Township Choir.
Mbawula have matured into an accessible high quality musical force celebrating the fusion of South African singers and UK Jazz Musicians.
